Mateo Tirres is currently pursuing a BFA in Dance at The Juilliard School. He began studying dance at the age of four at Dance Center Evanston, under the direction of Béa Rashid and attended high school at the Chicago Academy for the Arts (CAA), where he performed works by Randy Duncan, Robyn Mineko Williams, Patrick Simonello, and Jonathan Alsberry, among others. At CAA he also began creating dance. His choreographic work Now You See Me was featured in CAA's 2023 Spring Concert, alongside the work of professional choreographers. At Juilliard, Mateo has continued to pursue his passion for choreography. While a first-year student, his piece Holy Mess was selected for the 2024 Juilliard Choreographic Honors Showcase. It was also selected as a finalist for the Artist's Forum Choreographic Competition. At Juilliard and at dance intensives at Hubbard Street Dance, Jacob’s Pillow, and the Orsolina28 Foundation, Mateo has been able to study and perform the works of other world-renowned choreographers including Crystal Pite, Marco Goeke, Lauren Lovette, Rennie Harris, Ronald K. Brown, and Madison Hicks.
Mateo was recently commissioned by the Midwest Cecchetti Council of America to create a contemporary solo for the International Cecchetti Competition (2024). He was also commissioned to create a duet for Juilliard’s Daniel Saidenberg Music Faculty Recital Series (2024). Mateo has choreographed seven additional works in various venues and aspires to reach audiences worldwide.
